Part B · Fire safety

Mezzanine fire rating checker

Whether a mezzanine needs fire protection depends first on whether it is permanently occupied, then on its size and how much of the building it covers. Answer the questions below for an indication under Approved Document B.

The longest single side of the mezzanine floor.

Total floor area of the building the mezzanine sits within.

How the check works

Permanently occupied floors — offices, assembly, manufacturing, packing, canteens, and retail with public access — require fire protection to a 60-minute standard regardless of size.

Storage and infrequently-accessed floors can be exempt. A floor up to 10 m × 10 m covering less than half the building needs no fire rating. Up to 20 m × 20 m, it can be exempt if a fire detection and alarm system is fitted. Above 20 m × 20 m, or over 50% of the building, fire protection is required.
